Nicki Minaj might be the hottest lady in hip-hop right now, but just a few years ago she hit rock bottom. In the November issue of Cosmopolitan, the 28-year-old "Your Love" singer admits that at her lowest point she even considered taking her own life.
"It was just one dead end after another. At one point, I was, like, 'What would happen if I just didn't wake up?' That's how I felt," she says. "Like, 'Maybe I should just take my life?'"
The Trinidad and Tobago native, born Onika Tanya Maraj, says she felt that she didn't have any options and that her career wasn't going to come together. "I kept having doors slammed in my face," she says. "I felt like nothing was working. I had moved out on my own, and here I was thinking I'd have to go home."
This isn't the first time Minaj has talked about her less-than-idyllic young life. Back in January, she shared that she grew up in constant fear that her alcoholic, drug-addicted father would kill her mother. She credited that experience with making her "tough."
"I am an emotional person, but I am a tough person," Minaj said at the time. "It was very tough emotionally for me to have a parent who was an alcoholic and a drug addict. I had a mum with no money."
These days, however, Minaj is in a much better situation. Her debut album, Pink Friday, is certified platinum and even got her nominated for a Grammy (for "My Chick Bad" by Ludacris). Minaj admits to Cosmo that she is living high right now, and predicts that her success and hapiness will continue in the years to come.
So what does Nicki see in her not-so-distant future? "I will have put out five albums and will have an Oscar and Grammys," Minaj tells the magazine. "And I will be getting married and, a couple of years after that, will have a bun in the oven. My whole life is about being Nicki Minaj now. It's a never-ending saga."
